Chapter Fourteen

Rhys

"So what are your plans for Christmas, Erika?"

My secretary was in a stellar mood, buzzing around the office with a smile on her face. Our vacation started tomorrow, and both of us were anxious for it to begin.

"Spending time with my kids, of course." She grinned. "And I just found out I'm going to be a grandmother."

"Oh wow, that's wonderful." I said, then handed her a stack of files. "This is your first, right?"

"Yes," she laid the files on her desk and shook her head. "Alexandra just found out about the baby. She's two months along, and I'm already dreaming of ways to spoil my grandchild."

"I'm truly happy for you." I said, wishing I was a little happier for myself.

"What's going on with you, dear?" She sat down and started going through the files. "Something's bugging you. I can tell."

I normally didn't speak much of my personal life at work. But Erika was more than a secreatary. She was my friend.

"My ex is in town for a few weeks, and we've started seeing each other again."

Erika took off her glasses and eyed me. "You've never mentioned an ex before. What's his name?"

"Leo Sinclair." I perched on the corner of her desk. "He's a screenwriter in Hollywood. We used to date years ago when we were both still in school."

"A little fling never hurt anyone." She grinned. "I'd love to have one myself, but definitely not with my ex-husband. He's the most miserable man I've ever known, always hunting and drinking with his friends."

"I can't imagine you with someone like that. Weren't you an oboeist with the symphony a long time ago?"

"Yes, but I was young and dumb." She laughed. "Obviously you still care for this guy. Or is it just a physical thing?"

My smile flattened. "Unfortunately for me, I care. But I wish..."

"... you could turn back time, or something else sentimental." Erika finished my sentence. "Oh, I forgot to tell you some good news."

I stood and began pacing in front of her desk. "Tell me. I could use some good news for a change."

"Dorothea Wilson is on the mend." Erika opened the file cabinet next to her desk. "Her doctor at Poplar Springs sent over an update for you." She pulled out a file and handed it to me. "They put her on an experimental mood stabiliser, and it seems to be working."

I opened the file and read the notes Erika had typed up. "This is unexpected. She's filed for divorce?"

"Yep. Though I have to wonder about the timing. Making life-changing decisions while in the hospital is kind of strange." Erika leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. "Most doctors discourage that."

"You're absolutely right," I handed the file back to her. "But in her case, it's probably for the best. Would you mind sending her doctor a little thank you note? They didn't have to update us on Dorothea, and I want them to know how much I appreciate it."

I went back into my office, shut the door, and sat behind my desk.
